Getting a book published and selling your book in general should be regarded as a business. Even though you are writing passionately and with plenty of emotion about your subject, ultimately everything comes down to business. This is why one very important thing you need to keep on mind is that you have to “enchant” publishers with your book as well. If the publisher believes he is not going to be able to make money out of publishing your book…he will reject it. It’s as simple as that.
New authorsrepresent a financial risk for the publishing house. Even though you know you have written the perfect book, it is not your fault if the publisher rejects your work. He might do so because he can’t accept any more submissions for the year, because the subject matter does not fit the guidelines of the publisher…or simply because the expert editor is in a bad mood when reading your manuscript.
These are all things that are out of your control, so you just need to keep writing, and keep trying, because some day you will get published, maybe even by a reputable company such as Dorrance Publishing.
Then, if there are many authors who submitted work that is similar in subject matter with yours, the publisher needs to take tough decisions. He cannot publish all the authors who wrote on the same subject matter, but he needs to select one or two. Maybe this time you were not accepted, but this again does not mean that your work is not worth for being published…
Run a thorough research online, and suck up all the possible knowledge regarding the publishing industry. Read about famouspublishers such a Bantam Books or OxfordUniversity Press, and dare to submit your work even if you feel that you are way below the expectations. You just never know!
